Signs of an infestation

You will usually notice the evidence long before you see the pest itself. Look for:

• Droppings accumulating on ledges, balconies, cars and pavements
• Nesting material and feathers in gutters, on units and behind signage
• Persistent cooing and flapping from a roof void or light well
• Blocked gutters and downpipes causing damp and staining
• Bird mites and beetles appearing indoors below a nest site

Why it matters

The risks associated with feral pigeon in Malta:

• Droppings carry Salmonella, Chlamydia psittaci and Cryptococcus
• Dried droppings become airborne dust, which is a respiratory hazard during cleaning
• Acidic droppings corrode stonework, paint, metal and solar panels
• Nests block gutters, causing water damage and damp
• Nests harbour bird mites, carpet beetles and clothes moths that move indoors
• Slip hazard on walkways and steps

How to prevent it

Prevention is always cheaper than treatment, and for this species it is genuinely effective:

• Never feed pigeons. It is the single biggest driver of urban flocks
• Net or spike ledges, balconies and plant rooms before nesting establishes
• Mesh the gap beneath solar panels, a favourite nesting void
• Keep refuse areas closed and clear of spillage

How we treat feral pigeon

We manage pigeons by exclusion rather than destruction: stainless steel netting, post-and-wire systems, spike and gel deterrents, and mesh under solar panels, all specified to suit the building, including sensitive and historic façades. Work includes safe removal and disinfection of droppings and nesting material under controlled conditions, with biocidal treatment for associated mites and insects.
