Chemistry is the last step in our process, not the first. This page explains exactly what we use, why we use it, and what we do to keep your household, your staff and the environment out of harm’s way.
IPM is not a marketing phrase. It is a hierarchy, and it is a legal expectation under the EU Sustainable Use Directive: use non-chemical methods first, and justify any chemical intervention.
In practice it means the survey comes before the spray can leaves the van. It means we would rather fit a €17 brush seal than book you three rodent visits. It means the monitors we leave behind exist to prove the problem is gone, not to give us a reason to come back.
It also means being honest about the cases where a chemical treatment genuinely is the right answer. An established German cockroach infestation in a restaurant kitchen will not be resolved by sanitation advice alone, and pretending otherwise costs the business far more.
Inspect and identify — species, extent, entry routes, conditions supporting it.
Exclude and correct. Proofing, drainage, sanitation, storage, humidity.
Monitor. Non-toxic traps to measure the population objectively.
Treat with the minimum effective method — physical and biological first, targeted chemical where required.
Verify. Re-inspect, record, and only sign off when monitoring is clear.
Two thirds of our methods involve no insecticide at all — inspection, exclusion, monitoring, heat, steam and biological control.
Our methods
Nine methods, and when each one is right
Methods marked non-chemical involve no pesticide whatsoever.
Non-chemical
Inspection & identification
Nothing is applied until the species is confirmed and the harbourage found. Getting the species wrong is the single most common reason a treatment fails: Oriental and German cockroaches, for example, need completely different treatments.
Used for: Every job, without exception.
Non-chemical
Proofing & exclusion
Stainless mesh, brush seals, drain guards, duct sealing and gully covers. Physical exclusion is the only permanent solution to a rodent problem and it removes the need for repeat chemical treatment entirely.
Used for: Rodents, birds, scorpions, cockroaches entering from drains.
Non-chemical
Monitoring & trend analysis
Non-toxic glue monitors, pheromone traps and interceptors placed before and after treatment. They tell us whether the population is falling and give an objective end point rather than an opinion.
Used for: All commercial contracts, cockroaches, bed bugs, stored product insects.
Non-chemical
Heat & steam treatment
Controlled heat and steam kill bed bugs and their eggs on contact with no residue at all. Slower and more expensive than spraying, but the right answer in bedrooms, hotels and homes with young children.
Used for: Bed bugs, delicate textiles, sensitive environments.
Non-chemical
Biological control
Bti larvicide for mosquitoes is a naturally occurring bacterium that affects mosquito larvae specifically and is harmless to fish, birds, pets and people. Ferric phosphate for slugs works the same way.
Used for: Mosquito breeding sites, wells, cisterns, ornamental ponds.
Uses a licensed product
Gel & bait systems
Tiny quantities of insecticide in a food matrix, placed in cracks and voids where insects live and people do not touch. A whole kitchen cockroach treatment uses less than a teaspoon of gel in total, with nothing airborne.
Used for: Cockroaches and ants; the default method for both.
Uses a licensed product
Tamper-resistant bait stations
Rodenticide is never placed in the open. Locked stations, keyed, fixed in position, numbered on a site plan, recorded at every visit and removed once activity stops, in line with CRRU stewardship principles.
Used for: Rodent programmes where trapping alone is insufficient.
Uses a licensed product
Targeted residual application
Applied to cracks, crevices, wall bases and harbourage surfaces, never broadcast across a room. Correct application means a smaller quantity of product doing more work, with a defined re-entry time.
Used for: Fleas, ticks, spiders, silverfish, perimeter barriers.
Uses a licensed product
ULV fogging & space treatment
Reserved for situations where nothing else reaches: heavy fly infestations, void properties, post-infestation disinfection. Always with the area vacated, a defined re-entry time and ventilation afterwards.
Used for: Last resort, and always explained in advance.
Children, pets & vulnerable people
What we do differently in an occupied home
Standard practice in every home we treat
Baits and gels in preference to sprays, placed inside cabinets, hinges and voids where a child or pet cannot reach.
Tamper-resistant, locked stations for any rodenticide, fixed in position and removed at the end of the programme.
Fish and reptile tanks covered and pumps switched off during treatment. Aquatic life is far more sensitive to insecticides than mammals.
Beehives identified and treatment planned to avoid foraging times and drift.
Pet bedding, bowls and toys removed from the treatment area before we start and returned once surfaces are dry.
Re-entry times given in writing, never estimated verbally at the door.
Ventilation instructions and a written note of anything you must not clean.
Where we will refuse to use a product
We do not use insecticidal sprays on Pharaoh ant infestations: spraying causes the colony to bud and multiply. Bait only.
We do not fog occupied bedrooms for bed bugs where heat, steam and targeted application will do the job.
We do not place rodenticide in open trays, roof voids without stations, or anywhere non-target wildlife can reach it.
We do not destroy honey bee colonies where relocation with a beekeeper is possible.
We do not treat a property where the occupant has not been informed and given the re-entry conditions.
Ask for the safety data sheet
You are entitled to see the safety data sheet for anything applied in your home or business, before it is applied. We bring them, and we leave a copy. If a contractor cannot produce one, do not let them treat.
The safety process
Five points where safety is checked
Before the visit
You are asked about children, pets, fish and reptile tanks, beehives, pregnancy, asthma and food allergies. Fish and reptile tanks in particular need covering and their pumps switched off for some treatments.
On arrival
The technician confirms the species, explains what will be used and where, and agrees which areas are being treated. If you are not comfortable with a method, we use a different one or we do not proceed.
During treatment
Products go into cracks, voids and harbourage, not onto surfaces people and pets touch. Anything applied to an open surface is recorded and pointed out to you.
Before we leave
A walk-through: what was treated, what must not be cleaned, the exact re-entry time, and what you should expect over the next two weeks. You get this in writing as well as verbally.
Afterwards
A written report the same day with every product used and its safety data sheet. If anything concerns you, one phone call brings a technician back.
Products & the environment
What we use, and what it means for the islands
Authorised products only
Every product we apply is authorised for professional use in Malta and applied strictly within its label conditions: the right dose, the right site, the right frequency. Off-label use is both illegal and, in practice, the fastest route to resistance.
Resistance management
German cockroaches and house flies develop resistance quickly where the same active ingredient is used repeatedly. We rotate actives across visits and sites and monitor efficacy, which is one of the reasons over-the-counter products stop working long before professional programmes do.
Non-target species
Malta’s wildlife, feral cats and domestic pets all sit in the same environment as the pests. Locked stations, correct siting and prompt removal of unused bait keep secondary poisoning risk down, and we record every placement so nothing is left behind.
Waste and disposal
Empty containers, used bait, carcasses and contaminated material are removed from site and disposed of through licensed waste routes. Nothing goes in your bin, and nothing is rinsed into a drain.
Water protection
Wells, cisterns and roof tanks are common in Maltese properties and are frequently connected to domestic supply. We identify them before treating, use only water-safe biological larvicides where appropriate, and never apply residual insecticide anywhere it can enter stored water.
Protected species
Bats, honey bees and nesting wild birds have legal protection. We survey for them, and where they are present we adapt the work: relocation for bees, timing for birds, and specialist advice for bat roosts.
Safety questions
What people ask before they let us in
For most gel baits, dusts and targeted crack-and-crevice work you do not need to leave at all. Where a space spray or fogging is used, we ask people and pets to stay out for 2–4 hours and to ventilate afterwards. Your technician confirms the exact re-entry time before starting and puts it in writing on your treatment record.
We use products authorised for use in Malta and applied strictly to label. Wherever a child or pet is present we favour tamper-resistant bait stations, gels placed out of reach and non-chemical methods such as heat, steam, monitoring and proofing. Safety data sheets are left with you after every visit.
Clear the floor of the kitchen and bathroom cupboards so the technician can reach the back corners and the hinges, which is where the gel goes. Empty the bins. Wipe away grease from behind and beneath the cooker and fridge, because grease competes with the bait. Put open food into sealed containers. If you have a fish tank, tell us before we arrive. Do not clean or spray anything yourself for two weeks afterwards. DIY sprays repel cockroaches away from the gel bait and undo the whole treatment.
We survey every room, then treat with a combination of steam or controlled heat, residual insecticide applied to harbourages and encasements for mattresses. Most infestations need two or three visits 10–14 days apart, and we re-inspect before issuing a clearance certificate.
Honey bees are beneficial and we never destroy a healthy colony where relocation is possible. We work with local beekeepers to have swarms collected and rehomed. Wasps and hornets are a different matter and are treated as a stinging hazard.
Yes. Licence and insurance details are printed on every quotation, and we will send them to your insurer or auditor on request.
Got a specific concern? Ask before you book.
Pregnancy, a new baby, an aquarium, a cat that goes everywhere, a family member with a respiratory condition: tell us and we will explain exactly how we would handle it, or recommend a non-chemical alternative.
