American Cockroach
Periplaneta americana
The largest cockroach found in Malta, and one of the few that flies readily on warm nights. Associated with sewers, plant rooms, bakeries and hotel basements.
Where it lives in Maltese properties
Sewers, service ducts, boiler rooms, lift pits, laundries and any warm humid void. Travels long distances through drainage systems and enters buildings through ducting and service risers.
Signs of an infestation
You will usually notice the evidence long before you see the pest itself. Look for:
- Very large reddish-brown cockroaches, sometimes flying towards lights
- Droppings with ridged sides, roughly 2 mm long
- Egg cases glued near warm pipework and behind equipment
- Sightings in plant rooms, lift pits and basement corridors
