Clothes Moth
Tineola bisselliella
The adults do not feed at all. It is the larvae that eat wool, cashmere, silk and fur, and they do it in dark undisturbed places: the back of a wardrobe, under a rug, inside a stored suitcase.
Where it lives in Maltese properties
Wardrobes, drawers, under furniture, the underside of wool rugs, stored blankets, felt underlay, upholstery and any accumulation of natural fibre and pet hair.
Signs of an infestation
You will usually notice the evidence long before you see the pest itself. Look for:
- Irregular holes in wool, cashmere and silk garments
- Small pale moths fluttering weakly from a wardrobe when it is opened
- Silken tubes, webbing and gritty larval cases in folds and seams
- Damage concentrated in dark, undisturbed areas and rug edges under furniture
- Loose fibres and pile loss on wool carpets
